Crowns are used to correct teeth problems with fractures, decay, stains, or even those with heavy fillings. They can also be another approach to correcting crowded, rotated teeth. A crown is made of porcelain, metal or a combination of both. If a tooth has had root canal treatment or has lost a lot of its natural structure, a crown should be placed for strength and longevity.
Before the procedure, some of the tooth’s enamel is removed to create a structure to support the crown. An impression is made of the reduced tooth, and a temporary crown is put in place to function while the crown is being made. Our dental technician then fabricates the crown based on the impression. Approximately eight days later, the patient returns and the final crown is cemented permanently.
